As the excitement of the Paralympics 2012 starts we need to celebrate the achievements of the women and men who will take part over the next 10 days and also all those who took part in London 2012.
It is so good to see people achieve so much through hard work, commitment, dedication and determination. So many men and women have sacrificed so much to try and achieve their dreams of being the best in their chosen sport.
But these games were different from all those that had gone before – one reason was the number of women who participated. Each country represented had women in the team and there were
women taking part in every sport. It was great to see Sarah Attar participate in London 2012, as she was the first woman to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics when she ran in the 800 metres.
The overall percentage of women competing was the highest ever. In the 1984 Olympics 24% of the athletes were women and in 2012 the provisional figure is 44%, that is definitely something to be celebrated and applauded, so well done to the International Olympic Committee for helping to achieve this major step forward.
So we are moving in the right direction and we need to celebrate this. At Sophia Network we want to say a BIG well done to all those women and men who participated, to those who won a medal, some
beyond their wildest dreams and wish all those in Paralympics GB Team all the best.
